My SVT died today.

Crappy day.

Was driving down a major relatively crowded road when after shifting into second and giving it some gas I heard a bang (sounded like I had hit something in the road). Tried to give it some gas to get out of the way of the traffic behind me (on an incline) and the engine would rev but the car wasn't going anywhere so I pulled over to get out of the way and the engine died. Attempted to crank it and while I could hear the starter I didn't hear the engine.

I suspect my flywheel bit the dust which is pretty disappointing since my SVT is bone stock and only has 113K on it.

I think I'm going to move on for now and purchase a newer vehicle and eventually fix the SVT to use as an autocross/track car. It's had a good run but I'm finishing up my PhD and don't have time to deal with car troubles.

Sorry to hear that... Id check your timing belt too just to make sure its ok, would suck if you had to replace your valves on top of anything else that might be wrong. RIP little SVT...

My bet is on clutch disk spring failure or timing belt as well, but this part has me second guessing the timing belt:

I suspected the timing belt but when I peak under the cover it appears to still be clenching the gear teeth pretty well. Also my belt had been changed at 60K and was due for another one in 7K.

I'm going to inspect it a bit more tomorrow before I go test drive a Civic, Corolla, Mazda3, etc..

The weirdest thing is that the car was running top notch up until it crapped out and when it died I was in second gear at around 2000 RPMs at about half-throttle so definitely not stressing it out.

You should get a new Focus and just get the 5 speed instead if the DCT! Just my 2 cents.

If you liked your SVT you have to give the ST a shot.

Sent from my Galaxy S3.

So I just went out and tried to crank it for the hell of it. I can hear the engine turning over and it sounds almost like it's out of sync... I can hear almost like a wheezing noise coming from the exhaust every second or so. It *seems* like it wants to start but can't. I didn't hear any of the clanging and banging I've heard about in the timing belt horror stories so I'm at a bit of a loss as to what it might be. I think for the heck of it I may take it to a shop next week to get it looked at.

Edit: It looks like if i put off any new car purchase and basically drive my wife's old Camry for a while then I may be able to justify getting an ST. I test drove one a while ago and loved it so we'll see.
