My AC Compressor is bad on my 2002 Ford Focus SE. What to do?

I'd rather not spend the quoted $600 on repairing it, so I was hoping I could just get a shorter serpentine belt and bypass it. I've been researching, but I'm getting conflicting reports on whether the AC Compressor needs to be removed or not. According to my mechanic, it does, and it'll cost me a couple hundred. According to my boyfriend, it does not, and we should be able to buy a shorter belt. We tried one shorter belt, but we couldn't get it on.

Any thoughts? Thank you!

If you mean that your compressor is bad as in it no longer does its job, then just disconnect the clutch connector and leave it on the car. Cost = $0.

The mechanic said it's on its way out. I'm still driving the car, and I can hear the noise.

I'll look into your suggestion. Thank you!

Which motor in car?

If zetec then buy a non a/c belt, if he can't figure out how to get it on, then new boyfriend, one that can. Just kidding of course.

Or $36 a/c clutch bearing if the clutch not too torn up yet, and then just don't use a/c. Might not even be anything wrong with a/c, rather the clutch only.

Or, pull the a/c clutch alone if you need belt room. Leave compressor on. Need it off if looking for clutch bearing number anyway.
