"Dated", aka "tried and true"

Except that the new Accord also has a CVT available. At least they give buyers the choice. I wish Ford would do that for the Focus.

My 5spd did that but I wasn't exactly easy on it. Also it could be that the detailer sprayed an oil on the engine to shine and its the oil heating up.

Pretty sure he meant the choice of multiple transmissions...

RIP

Maybe I said that wrong.

Correct. That is what I was trying to say, but I did not do it very well so I can see why it might have been misunderstood:

I was responding to the OP's comment:

and trying to clarify that "sticking to" means "still offering" rather than "offering only" the "dated automatic tranny" by pointing out that it is offered in addition to their CVT in the Accord.

What I meant when I said, "I wish Ford would do that for the Focus" was that I thought Ford should give buyers a choice between the DCT and a "dated automatic tranny", like the one in the prior generation Focus or the one in the new Escape. I did NOT mean that I thought they should offer a CVT. (Yuck!) Apologies for even making anyone think that, and for any discomfort that would have caused.

I agree. While I am not yet sure I would buy a Focus even with the DCT, I would not even consider it with a CVT. The CVT in the Murano my wife bought for herself works OK, but I rarely have to drive it and it has 260 hp. Anything less just doesn't work well with a CVT, other than for getting better fuel economy. Its long term cost to own still concerns me, too. (Fingers crossed.)

When (if?) Ford gets some version of its DCT sorted out they will have the best alternative available for small cars. Here's hoping that will be soon, but for now the manual looks like a better choice to me.

Mazda's skyactive 6 speed automatic sems to be a nice compromise between the drawbacks of the CVT in other cars and the DCT in the focus. The DCT was intended (and does) to get high milegae, so does the skyactive automatic.

I have driven mine over 3500 miles so far and not one shudder, clatter or lurch.

NOT as aggressive an accelerator as the Focus but cruises effortessly at 80 and my dash readout says 36.4 overall.

It downshifts when you hit the gas a little more than normal cruise pressure and the manual shift is nicer than on the focus, if you choose to use it.

those folks who like aggressive acceleration would prefer the focus, those who have been living in the DCT nightmare would fall in love with it.
