I started my enlistment as a 19k (tanker), and then re-enlisted into 67U (CH-47 Repairer, later changed to 15U). I ETS'ed at 8 years and sometimes wish I hadn't simply due to the fact that I would only have 5 years left until retirement. I can't honestly say that there is a specific job that I would have rather done outside of Special Forces. One doesn't fully understand how much being part of the Big Army sucks until they've been lucky enough to have spent time elsewhere.

EXACTLY, Duane! Once you get a position like that, you can NEVER go back! Like having your balls clipped... Ever since going EOD I've realized this... So, contemplating SFAS this next year, I should have in '04 when I was trained up for it but overseas tours got in the way. :)

I don't agree at all. I did 8 years Marine Corps. Haven't regretted EASing for one second. I make more money, I get to do what I like, I don't have to shave if I don't want to. I don't have to live in some trashing military town. I get to wake up after the sun. No deployments. No Uniforms. No formations. No power tripping idiots. Whats not to love. Nothing I miss.

I guess I'll join the party.
I originally wanted to go into the UAV field, but it was too new at the time, 1998. There wasn't even an actual AIT for it.
I ended up going 63B, Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic, which changed over to 91B.
Been AGR in the Army Reserves for 11 years, 3 years TPU before that.

You're missing what I said. Big Army is the general population. Little Army is Special Forces. Once you've been part of the Little Army, the Big Army is...a let down. I only augmented them for a few months in which I lived in their compound, flew their missions, dealt with their people. They are adults and treat you like one as well. It's almost like being a civilian and doing an Army mission. Very high-caliber people and a very different experience. My first day back with the general population was the day that I was 100% committed to getting out.

I don't miss the Big Army in any way, shape, or form. The absolute only thing I would have liked to have had from the Big Army is the retirement check.

my bad. i took the 'big army' as a term for civilians. i feel the same about tge marine corps. going from a specialized unit to the 'regular' marine corps was pretty lame.

anyway, out and lovin it.

I got out in '09 (USMC 0311), but I had multiple times where I was assigned to support roles for guys doing all sorts of stuff that they couldn't talk about. The level of autonomy they had was crazy when compared to a regular unit.

They were offering me 60k (tax free) to reup as a Lance and go into Intelligence. I have no regrets on getting out.

I was a na´ve young just-turned 18 year old when I joined the Army back in 1983. I wanted to go in as a helicopter mechanic. When I got to the MEPS station they gave me some bs story about how the only MOS available at the time was a cook. Me being young and na´ve, I wanted to join so I said okay. So I go to basic Ft. Jackson S.C. and when I went to do my MOS (which was also at Ft. Jackson) my orders said to report to D company. I told the Sergeant that I thought I was supposed to be in C company but he told me basically to zip it because my orders stated company D (which was 76Y supply specialist). Halfway through MOS training he calls me in the office and realizes they screwed up. So my choice was stay in Supply or go to C company and start over training as a cook. Course I said I'd stay in Supply (quartermaster corps). Whew I dodged that bullet. I didn't want to be no cook!

Course, then they tried another switcheroo 3 years later when it was time to re-enlist. I was in Germany at the time. They told me there wasn't an opening in supply for re-enlistment and that I'd have to switch MOS's. They wanted me to be a MLRS driver. For those that don't know that is one of these:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M270_Mu..._Rocket_System

Course I was wise to them by then and said, okay, I will just ETS out and walked away. Like 2 weeks later, they offered me no less than my choice of 14 different locations in my MOS. Hawaii being one of them. I chose Arlington Va.

Now years later, I wish I would've made the MOS switch. Would have been cool to say I drove one of those.
