I recently did the same job, and had the same issue of bearing binding almost immediately on the spindle. I took some steel wool and just cleaned the spindle a bit, I then took the washer off one of the old spindle nuts, and used the washer with the axle nut socket and 2" extension to help push the bearing onto the shaft. It took a lot of wiggling and slowly changing angle but then it popped right on. The reason I used the washer/ socket was at first I got the bearing onto spindle and I. noticed the inner race had popped out, so I had to pull it off. One last tip, I was told to spin the drum counterclockwise as you tighten the nut, 173 ft lbs on my 02. Hope this helps.
