I've had my 2012 FF for almost 2 years so I'm stopping by my dealer today to pick up a replacement filter. When installing the new filter, does the inlet side of the filter face the engine or does it face the interior. The old filter has a directional-flow arrow stamped on the side.

You should be able to reference the directional flow arrow on the old filter to figure this out. The directional arrow would point to the outlet side of the old filter.

inlet --> outlet

If you know which way the old filter was arranged, you should then be able to install the new one accordingly. If you don't know which way the old one was arranged, I would guess that the inlet is on the engine side, but I can't say that with 100% confidence.

The quicklane I go to never knew about the cabin air filter. They told me it would cost about $100+ dollars to replace. No thanks...I'll do it myself.

I removed the filter so that I could take it to the local auto parts store for reference, but unfortunately I didn't pay attention to which way the arrow on the side of the filter was facing. I should have known that the filter is not yet available through auto parts stores (I checked with Autozone, O'reilley's, & Advance). My local Ford dealer didn't have one but is ordering it. The cost is about $34. Hopefully some of the aftermarket companies will start making that filter. Based on my experience with after-market cabin air filters on other cars, I expect the cost to be about 50% of Ford's cost.

Be aware that replacing the filter located in the passenger side floorboard area can be a challenge. In my case it would have served me well to have a young non-overweight person perform the swap. After removing the 2 fasteners & the lightweight cover, disconnect both milti-pin fuse connectors so they are out of the way.

The best tip I've seen so far for gaining better access to R&R the filter is in post #53 of this thread. There are pics here that might help with the configuration also. The foam seal is on the engine side of the slot.
