transmission problem

Help please. I have a 2002 Ford Focus. I bought this car 2 years ago from a friends son. It has been a wonderful car. I noticed about a year ago, occassionally it would slip while driving. I went to a transmission man that we have always used as I thought it was best to have it looked at before it was broke. He said he only did automatic transmissions and this is a 5 speed. I have never found another transmission place that I trusted. In the meantime, last week I was driving, and after U-turning, and downshifting, my car made a funny noise and like it wasn't in gear. I stopped the vehicle and put it back into gear. It ran fine. Now my problem, different people say different things...it could be a clutch problem or a transmission problem, how do I know this without spending a lot of money? Thanks in advance for your help.

Sounds like your clutch is slipping. I'd guess you need a new clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing.
