I've never done an audio upgrade in any car I've ever owned but I'm looking to upgrade my '13 SE. I have a couple of questions about this setup.

I have the 6 speaker setup in my car. Since this is a 4 channel amp, can I just hook up the 4 main door speakers to this and continue to run the tweeters out of the stock head unit? Would this create a big negative effect in sound quality?

Hi Chris,

The stock wiring is split, sending signal to the woofer and tweeter, though it's though a single channel. If you go with a component like mine, you install a crossover so only the proper signals are passing through the tweeter. With a coaxial, the crossover is built in. All this to say you're already running out of a 4 channel stock amp, so you're golden. The amp gave a real sonic boost, and I love how easy it is to set up. It's a huge improvement over stock, but the DSP still hampers the sound. The next step is a signal processor. If you need help with the setup, I've tore the car apart numerous times, so I'm glad to share whatever wisdom i may have stumbled across.

I'll be working on a write up over the next few days, detailing how to install both, if anyone is interested.

The amp is installed in front the head unit, and slightly below. I used the attached mounting brackets to screw the amp to the surrounding plastic, after first laying down a layer of foam against the brackets, and against the head unit.
Did you also have the amp with the initial 3 sets of speakers? Or was the most recent setup the only one to have an amp?

And won't you need a second amp if you add a sub? If you do, do you feel like having a 5-channel amp to begin with would have been cleaner in the first place? Thanks.

Does sound like all sets of speaker tests were done off the stock head unit, no aftermarket amp. Do clarify.

If so, the stock HU would be low wattage and high distortion compared to the Alpine amp. May have saved a ton of money running the amp on the first set of Infinity.

Infinity makes 2ohm (nearer 3ohm) speakers to "lessen the effect of the thin guage stock speaker wires" (which add resistance). More importantly, stock cheap speakers are often 2ohm already so a low watt head unit can be installed by car company. Adding an amp to infinity speakers really gets the most out of an amp compared to most aftermarket speakers, which are 4ohm.

To OP: where did you place the tweeters? That's the biggest benefit over coax. High frequencies (tweeters) are line of sight so having them point to the ears, as opposed to coax pointing at the legs, makes a huge difference in SQ.

co-ax w/o amp

This is a nice installation. So, i got a pair of DB651s on my 14' SE w/ 6sp audio. Installed them in the front door. Left the stock tweeter as is. These speakers are supposed to be very good (atleast according to Crutchfield), however, I lost bass, which is kind of understandable. Now, when you mention that you could have just added an amp with the Co-ax at first, would it sound close to the components? The reason I ask is I recently recieved the DB6501 components and debating on the install. As of now, no amp (I would refer not to add an amp, unless no after market speakers can sound good with stock HU). So, if I leave the co-axs in the front and add an amp, will it sound good? What about rears? Thanks much! I am also debating on returning the Polks to get the Infinities. Polks sound a little muddy to my ears (maybe its just me :) ).

To get better response, you need an amp. Also, you MUST seal up the access holes in the doors to prevent cancellation(the rear wave and front wave of the speaker meeting). that will greatly improve your midbass response

Sorry, this question may be lame, but When you say access holes, are you referring to the speaker cut out? Should I get a Dynamat kit or something for this? Any pic or reference you have will greatly help so I can do based on your suggestion. I did buy a Dynamat kit to put around the bracket but since I reused the factory braket (by cutting out the old speaker), I couldnt find a right way to install the Dynamat.
