Only time will tell with what is rolling off the line right this second but there are still issues with ones that are currently on the road. Let's hope Ford will get the DCT to operate like it's supposed to for most buyers.

How do we know?

That's what some of us thought (and hoped) when the 2013s came out, but then we started seeing owners having the same problems with them as had been seen with the 2012s. What you say should be true, but it's hard to tell whether it really is. Aside from TSBs, any carmaker is not likely to share information about what parts (like sensors, servos, or the oil seals inside the DCT) have been upgraded along the way, or what changes have been made to their proprietary software.

That means all we can do is wait to see how it goes for new owners of 2014s.

Either way, I'll probably still choose a manual transmission over the DCT. The probability of not getting a defective DCT may be improving, but even on its best behaviour it gets some of the same complaints today as the ones the "car rags" had two years ago:

Owners have also complained for both early and current builds that SelectShift is slow to respond. (There's probably more I'm forgetting at the moment.)

It's not surprising that it takes longer to teach a computer how to operate a manual transmission (or two at once, in this case) than it does to teach an eager teenager. (I remember getting the hang of it in less than half an hour but it's taking >2 years so for for the DCT in the Focus.)

Some people say they don't like a manual transmission because they drive a lot in slow or stop-and-go traffic, but that's apparently the kind of driving where the current DCT design is at its worst. The computer may have the edge for fast shifts during steady acceleration, but it will be a while before they get as good as humans at all the rest. The TCU can get a lot of information about what the driver is doing (throttle position, steering angle, engine RPM, etc.) but it cannot (yet) see the road ahead, nor read the driver's mind. That will always give the human operator the ability to work the shifter better in many situations.

As long as carmakers are under pressure from the government and lots of buyers to push the limits for fuel economy and emissions, our preferences for better driveability and/or performance probably do not count for much. I don't expect some of what's wrong with the DCT to change until/unless tuners get into it. (That probably won't help us who live in California, though.)

What has become obvious to me is that it is taking a longer to get the DCT "right" than people buying 2013s expected. There's also a pattern that they're not always "bad" from the beginning, but often work fine for quite a while before failing.

Ford's CEO made this admission months and months ago with little to no DCT progress apparent since then. So either: he wasn't being truthful about the urgency for a fix or it's a helluva problem for which Ford hasn't found a solution.

We all know the old saying: "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."

yep hindsight. also many reviews just parrot other reviews because the guys putting together the articles don't actually drive the cars. so you say something a couple of times and it becomes fact.
