A/C Problems

I'm trying to gain an understanding of my 2007 A/C problem.

The problem is: some, not much, not enough, cold air.

I hear a click, presumably the compressor, then there's a whirr for two or three seconds.

I tried recharging it, but it was only a little low.

There was some behavior when I had the gauge connected: after the click, the pressure dropped very low and then after the whirr, rose to normal.

I'm a little handy, and very broke, so if there's anything I can do myself, I'd like to know about it.

All input appreciated. TIA.

Still low, you are not putting out exact numbers needed to diagnose a/c, and by post, not familiar with a/c. Put your numbers out there.

You cannot tell condition of the system with a low pressure gauge only. Why people who do it for a living use two gauges.

Thanks for your response.

The pressure drops to about 5 after the compressor clicks, then rises to 45, what I understand to be the upper limit(for the low pressure port).

I was concerned that if I added more freon, the pressure might be too high at the high end of the cycle.

If it was just a matter of adding more freon, that would be great. I'm confused by the behavior of the gauge.
