Look at stat, if it has one you'll know what I mean. Trapped BB or poppet in a valve. The bleed hole. Stupid idea that keeps someone's brother's BB company in business.

And don't ask what a 'poppet' is................LOL.

Update:

Changed the thermostat. Not hard to do, but sure no small block chevy!

Typically a 5 mile run on the fwy at 70 would do the trick to get it to start to get on the warm side. Took it on about a 10 mile run and it seems to be all good now. Needle straight up if not a tick to the left of center.

Here is a pic of the old one:

It appears that it was rubbing on its self as seen where the "rust" is rubbed off.

Thanks for everyone's input. I have a drive across the 120 deg desert this weekend. Wish me luck!

Luck. FYI they all pretty much rub like that, the frame guides the valve there.

I'm sad to report that the thermostat was not the issue with my cooling system. As soon as I hit the real hot weather going across the desert, she started to get warm. I managed to make it to my destination and back, but it was frustrating watching the temp gauge for 90% of the trip.

It would seem like it would get hotter quicker anything over 70mph. It would actually cool down if I would slow down to about 50 and then accelerate fairly quickly back to 70-80. City driving and stop and go traffic still show no signs of getting hot.

I'm thinking its the water pump.

What do you guys think?
