Tuning... Questions

I am totally new to the car modification scene, but I am having fun with it and think it is a great way to spend my expendable income! :)

I have several questions regarding tuning... I'm a bit in the dark when it comes to this, no matter how many threads I read.

Everyone keeps talking about tuning... non stop.

1) I know what the definition tuning is but what exactly is going on when you tune a car?

2) What is needed to tune a car? Do you have to take it to a shop?

3) Why are there several or more tuning companies involved in this aspect of car modification?

4) Why isn't tuning available for DCT yet?

5) Why have I heard that certain upgrades such as CAI or Exhaust are worthless without tunes?

Thanks in advance everyone! A little knowledge would be great!

A little start to some complicated and long discussion-

1)I know what the definition tuning is but what exactly is going on when you tune a car? Parameters that are adjusted within how the car is designed to run. This includes but is not limited to the rev limit, top speed limiter, ignition timing, fueling parameters, etc. This allows for better control of the fuel combustion in order to get a better and more complete burn safely and allows for modifications that would otherwise cause the OEM parameters to run the engine dangerously.

2) What is needed to tune a car? Basically, just a device that can control the parameter changes and someone that knows what they're doing and how to do it. Do you have to take it to a shop? For a custom tune specific to your engine and environment, yes (unless the tuner does remote tuning).

3) Why are there several or more tuning companies involved in this aspect of car modification? Because just like any other service or item, there is competition. Competition breeds innovation which ultimately can yield better products.

4) Why isn't tuning available for DCT yet? Only recently have tuners become able to crack ECU codes, and it takes time to build a tune that works safely and efficiently. We went roughly two years (or about 6 months after the ST release) without being able to get into the ECU to start with.

5) Why have I heard that certain upgrades such as CAI or Exhaust are worthless without tunes? This just isn't true, regardless of the source. There is plenty of documentation and dyno graphs that are posted to prove otherwise. Will they work better with a tune? Yes. But to claim that they are worthless is either incorrect or someone incorrectly conveying their message.

number 4 DCT tuning is available from injected, only SCT has not yet released DCT tuning.

Tuning like most performance mods are simply more aggressive than the OEM is,when Ford sets up the car it has to work for everybody, in poor conditions, follow EPA regulations, try to keep the noise down.

Nobody has released DCT tuning yet.

Oh, I think I see what is meant. Tuning for the motor of cars equipped with the DCT is indeed available, just nothing for the actual DCT itself. Yet

Yeah that is how I read it. The other way with tuning the DCT settings will be available soon from both tuning companies more than likely. Confirmed for injected and since SCT just provides the tools I don't see why they won't have the option for the tuners to be able to change the settings.

Actually what I meant is whether or not tuning was available for vehicles equipped with DCT. Last I read it was only stick shift vehicles that could be tuned...
