Leaving Vehicle in Neutral

I live in Thailand where it is quite common to leave your car in neutral so a parking attendant can move it a few feet if necessary (you don't give him the keys as we do in America).

Yesterday for the first time I had to do this with my Focus and I got a warning message that the car was in neutral. There was no way to dismiss the warning and I could not lock the vehicle. I finally gave up and just walked away.

Luckily I only had to leave the car for a few hours, because I was afraid of draining the battery with the warning.

Is there any way around this?

So they push your car with no way to steer it? Why are there parking attendants if you actually park the car your self? Such a screwed up system if you ask me.

Different Places, Different "norms".

I imagine cars are parked nose to tail in rows, and may be pushed back & forth to get at those deeper in the row. Done here by leaving a key, not a trusted procedure there.

If this is needed often, & for longer parking, wiring in a "parking switch" that fools the system by bypassing the gear position switches manually may be possible (Wiring diagram & electrical knowledge needed).

Those with '13's can experiment to see if there's any easier solution that works..

Luck!

I found the solution!

A Thai friend did some inquiries on a Thai motor forum and they pointed him to the Driver assist menu in the vehicle. There is an item called Park lock ctrl which was not checked by default.

We tried checking it and that did the trick! I can now leave the car in neutral without a warning and I can lock the car.

Why neither the Thai nor the English Ford Focus manual didn't make any mention of this option is a mystery to me!

You must leave the key in the locked car/ignition too? This is to prevent the car from being stolen? - assuming that's why the car is locked - and we feel safer with this? Or can you pull the key out in NEUTRAL now?

Here we give parking attendants keys to the ignition and not the glovebox - to protect valuables- lol.

IF leaving a key in the ignition is needed then maybe a 'CHIPLESS' key would give you piece of mind too?

I just rented a 2013 SEL a few months ago - with key. Didn't see THAT menu option or it just didn't click for me!
