Probably either works for ford, or one of their suppliers. I work for the company that makes glass for most car company's, I've been in both the michigan focus plant and the east liberty honda plant. Just taking tours and seeing how things work and how the parts fit.

Talk about two completely different worlds fords a union plant everyone is wearing street close and lounging around on lounge chairs and chilling. At the non-union honda plant it's strickly buisness only.

Wikipedia says:

Quote:
Racing stripes, also called Le Mans stripes, were applied to racecars to help identify them in the field during races, and to help a driver realign a spun out-car with the track.
I have a hard time believing the second claim. I've never spun out a car, or done any racing. But even with dust from rallying (which I've also seen cited as a reason), I find it hard to believe that the driver can't figure out which way the car is pointed without a stripe saying "this way to the front end". If you're that disoriented, you need to say off the throttle until you do know which way the car is going.

I'll buy the bit about distinguishing marks on otherwise identical cars, and just the "because racecar" association for looking cool. But maintaining the direction of your vehicle? Seriously?

There might be a little truth to the first claim. But the stripes they need to be refurring to are the FIA fender stripes that was used in the 60s by carrol shelby and other to help identify the cars which was painted the same color from the pits as the cars went by.

The directional stripe does exist, but not on the exterior. It's on the steering wheel that way they know which ways is forward. Most "racing" cars come with it. The raptor comes with it too.

That's cool you get into the plants. I'm a ford senior master tech and I don't get to do that stuff.

Thanks. That stripe does seem more useful. I had thought that was the motivation for the three-spoke steering wheel -- you always know which way is down. "Front" is of course opposite that spoke, but it'd be easier to see if it were marked on top.

(You could mount the steering wheel upside down, but I imagine that might be less desirable in a crash.)
