No one around me wanted to mess with a chipped key.
Well the first dealer I went to wanted to charge $5, but he said the key that I bought from Steve wasn't a Focus key (apparently he never heard of a SVT or leather seats either). I went to another dealer and the guy knew it was a Focus key right off the bat and the cut it for free.

I doubt a hardware store can program the chip, that's the hard part. Anyone can cut the key, it's getting the chip programmed, IF you only have one key, like I do. If you already have 2 key, just get it cut at a hardware store for a few bucks, then you can program it yourself, instruction in your owners manual.

More key woes

I only have one key for my 2012 FOCUS and was planning on buying two blanks from Ebay but just found out the Ford dealer in my small town does not even CUT these- they order from Detroit premade via the VIN. They can program them but my worry is WOULD THEY program an Ebay key? Guess its up to the individual dealers, but in my case, I have to get it CUT first, then programmed.

Any and ALL ideas/suggestions w/b APPRECIATED!

Interesting check your owners manual as to programming, did you lose your second key? I got my 03 with one key, picked a second off of an online buy but then my local dealer was only $2 more and they cut the two new keys and reprogrammed the car for all three.

No such luck..........only got one key and the 2012 is NEW AND UPDATED!!!!!! THey are laser cut and many small dealers dont have a machine. They can order it precut from FORD and then program them locally- total cost around $175 for me here in western NC.

Check out your local locksmith shops (not hardware store, but a lock smith / lock & safe store...), they will be able to duplicate the key, and if they do autos they will be able to program your key/car for you. Just had a key made and programmed for my 2012 last week as it had just one key when I bought it, and I don't like the idea of having just one key...

Did you buy the 2012 car new? It doesn't seem possible that a new car could come with one key.

I would try to track down the dealer or ask for to fix your situation.

As far as the mk1s, my local hardware store (Ace) was able to code it, but I am not able to make duplicates with this Ace key. Something is amiss with it but it starts the car fine.

not new

Not brand new but close, and yes I only got ONE key, but $14480 for the 2012 SEL w/3800 miles made me smile! Dont you think I did pretty well? I've located a locksmith that will do it for $85 total but I'm getting two for $130 so I can have a spare on the car. Its a long drive from my rural town but I am consolidating some trips to make it worthwhile.

The car is under factory warranty. I know a warranty doesn't cover a lost key, but I think Ford might help you out regardless. Just explain that you only got one key.
