What to look for on a used '12 Focus?

So my Saturn Astra is totaled (everyone is fine) and I've pretty much much settled on a '12 Focus hatchback 5-speed as a replacement. I found an SE with 37k miles for what i deemed to be a good price and signed a letter of intent to buy it pending 3rd party inspection (which has to be done onsite). Is there any early word on what I should have the mechanic look out for at this point?

My only concern right now is that with only 37k miles on it, its already on a second set of tires, not real high-end ones either. I'm afraid this means the previous owner really thrashed around on it, but obviously that's pure speculation without any other knowledge. I checked the carfax, no redflags there. The oil had been changed at 4-5k interval and the tires rotated a few times at the dealer that's about all I'm seeing.

Anyone help? Thanks!

I have a 5 speed hatch and they only thing ive noticed is the body by the rear light tends to stratch the paint and wear through, other then that its an awesome fun car to drive! :-) Furthermore every car has qwirks or personality traits so dont get worked up over small things and dont get paranoid to much. Pretty solid car on the over all, search the site if you wanna see problems that people have run acrossed, its in the mk3 , tsb recalls section.

Oh and the continent pro contacts (from the factory tire) are known to last a short time as well, couple people only had the last 20 30 k.

Sounds like a decent choice in models, the DCT transmission isn't exactly loved by all even when working properly & those reporting with 5-spds have been happy.

Guessing the SE you're looking at doesn't have the full electronics suite of toys, another area not all are exactly happy with.

Tire wear concerns have started to show up for some, now there are more out there with miles on them. Alignment is likely the cause there, as it's been with many of the older models. Toe-in at the rear that's near the maximum allowed, rather than set at a minimum, was the culprit in the past & I'm betting that situation hasn't changed. Last thread I saw on this the poster was worried about needing a pair replaced at 47,000 with the other pair less worn - he had only done 3 rotations however so one set was on the rear for 30,000 at that point, explaining the different wear.

You can check out all the "New Car" problem threads in the archive section of the MKIII Forum here, most non-current threads of that type got put there for easy reference.

It seems like we've heard of every complaint & issue there's been with these new cars, members who've traded up from older models have been quite happy, with few (if any) issues by comparison. New owners primarily post if they've had a concern, so the sample is a bit "skewed".

DCT (transmission), MFT (My Ford Touch) electronics, and Electric Power Steering have been the main issues I've seen. You're avoiding the first, Second has been updated by now if you have it, and at 37,000 the steering is past any initial problems.

Luck!

And Welcome to FF!
