First change at 5,200 (for free at the dealer), second at 11,063, third at 20,964, both done at home with Motorcraft filter and Motorcraft 5W-20 synthetic blend.

Moving forward, 10,000 will be the interval I stick with, or if the oil life monitor tells me otherwise.

You are a brave owner. Ford is unique (I think) in allowing a 10,000 mile OCI in a direct injection engine without specifying synthetic oil. By contrast, Toyota allows a 10k interval only with a full synthetic and with conventional port injection. Non-syn intervals are 5k. Hope Ford has done its homework. On the other hand, this is the group that engineered MFT and the DCT, so what could go wrong?

I like your oil change "plan" except for one very minor detail :)

I would use a full-synthetic product such as Pennzoil Platinum, Amsoil, or even Mobil 1. Also an upgraded filter might be a good compliment to the synthetic oil as well.

If you asked any other "car guy" they would probably say the same........

As a "car guy" I will not use parts other than Ford Motorcraft, even if Motorcraft costs more. I want the parts approved by the OEM.

And synthetic blend hasn't caused issues with the 10,000-12,000 mile intervals we run in our Escort, can't see paying extra for full synthetic unless I'm going to push the interval out to 15,000 or 20,000, and I won't do that until the warranty is up.

You're probably right. I'm probably wrong.

I think that your method is perfect.

You might want to consider doing at least one used oil analysis to see how your syn blend oil is holding up to the 10,000-12,000 intervals. Just because your extended OCI hasn't "caused issues" in your Escort, doesn't mean the additives aren't fully depleted at those intervals.

Just took my 2012 in for excess oil use. Service lady told me they recommend 5k intervals 10 for synthetic and that's why I am using oil.. The sticker from my free oil change done by them at 8k says next change at 16k. So service tech checked for leaks. Saw some oil between engine and trans, installed dye. Will see what happens.

I think I've lost all faith in maintenance minders. My sister-in-law just got done with some major topside engine work on her Equinox after following the maintenance minder faithfully. New cams, chain & guides, thankfully on GMs dime because they had to admit their computer was miscalculating how often she should be changing her oil. Near the end, her car sounded like a Farm-all tractor. So, they've basically told her to ignore the computer and change her oil every 5,000 miles to keep this from happening again.

Lame.
