I just did 700 miles each way to a small town in Iowa from Denver on I-80 and back and was averaging 75-90 most of the way with a few downshifts accompanied with some brisk passing of semi trucks and got 31-34mpg which was decent but speeds over 70 seem to really kill MPGs.

Just drove from Santa Monica (los Angeles) to Las Vegas got 38.6 mpg would of been better, but took me an hour! To get out of Los Angeles! Stupid traffic prob could of gotten atleast 40-42mpg. I was going 70 most the time when i got out of LA, occasionally bumping up to 80 or 85mph. I noticed I got better gas milage with cruise control off and just gauging the speed and coasting when I hit 80 to go back to 70mph or 75.

update. The last tank was not good at all, even for mostly all highway driving. However I did fill up at Stop and Shop and had just put 18" wheels on the car. So will have to see how that plays out.

Also, with the new upgrade to Road Trip it will now graph MPG vs fuel type.

I have gone the following amount of miles on each grade:

regular - 15,267
midgrade - 4,821
premium - 1,306

44.0mpg. Ultragauge for information assistance, 47psi in the tires(kelly charger gt-installed before i purchased the car-cpo), plus grade fuel. 90%highway. No other modification. Will be adding a k&n filter next week. Full synthetic at next oil change. Learning throttle control is the big thing. The ultragauge will show you what you are doing wrong/right. I used the same techniques in my 06 civic to get 4-6 mpg better than highway rating. Check out ecomodder.com for tips. Btw, The Focus is a much nicer car than civic overall. I had an EX 5sp coupe. I just question long term reliability; civic had 220k on it when traded in and ran great. Hope to get that and more out of the focus.

Can anyone suggest a method for estimating highway vs. city MPG? I have overall MPG for about 25 fill-ups plus corresponding estimates on percentage highway vs. city driving.

Too many variable to give an accurate estimate. I can get over 40mpg in city driving if it's the right time of day and I hit the lights right, however, if it's the wrong time of day and I hit the lights badly it can drop down to pretty near 20mpg on the same stretch of road.

The big killer for mileage with the MK3 is stop-and-go driving, I'm not sure why the MK3 is particularly bad but it is. Of course, if, like me, you can frequently drive quiet back country roads at 55mph you can easily see better than 40mpg and sometimes more like 45mpg.

So, without knowing more about the kind of driving you do it's impossible to give you a single number for city driving -- the range is petty much 20-40 mpg with most probably about 28mpg.
