now when 4k tv's get popular, you will want to make sure you get the newest version of hdmi. Otherwise, pretty much any one will do blu-ray/hd tv just fine

HDMI cables use a system similar to USB in that they transmit data digitally, and follow each batch of packets with a "checksum". This checksum is like a shipper's manifest, in that it contains a checklist for the device to confirm that it's received every piece of data that was transmitted. That said, regardless of the quality of the cable you're still going to get the same exact data across it.
