This is seeming to be the case, though all of the specifics are a little unsure...

What is for sure is that having a proper tune would allow aftermarket components to be run in a much safer manner, which in turn can help create the demand for aftermarket companies to produce more components. Win-win

With out knowing what caused the engine failure, it's hard to say what you should avoid.

Were the pistons cracked because of detonation due to a server lean AF ratio? If the intake/header combo has introduced enough air into the system where you've exceeded the ECU's ability to compensate, you're going to have big engine esploding problems.

High RPMs is slightly more difficult to diagnose as it really depends on what lets go first. i.e. spun bearing, rod bolt, rod, oil starvation.

If they removed the rear sensor that shouldn't be an issue.... The car isn't going to operate removing the front O2.

**double post fail**

As far as I know there is only two people who have had engines fail on here. Myself with a completely stock engine. I broke a piston. The other guy raced his car with the front (wideband) o2 sensor removed, he had a header exhaust and intake modifications. He put a rod out the side of the block

The second one was retarded. He was asking for it IMHO. I may get flamed for saying that, but beat the shit out of a car, especially one without the proper equipment, and you are asking for it.

I do not see how he ran without the wideband though.

Just constant abuse could have done his engine in. These engines are tough I am sure, but not purpose built for performance.

It would have been fairly easy to run it without the wideband, it would throw a code and complain, but it should be running just off of the base tables in open loop form, and sometimes it's going to go too lean because it can't tell how it's doing without the feed back, therefore killing the engine.

Given they said they did not connect the up stream o2 sensor because the wires weren't long enough it sure sounds like the wideband was either not connected at all, or it was placed in the down stream position where it was useless.

This combined with the abuse did the car in.
