Tranny Questions - help needed!

About 3am, my son calls me re his 2002 svt. It will shift into 1st/2nd and reverse normally, and the 4th is somewhere near 6th, and 3rd near where 5th is normally. He is incredibly down, and after looking around the forum, I realized that there is no direct match for his problem, sooo... help?
Thanks in advance,
Richard

(yes, the svt WAS my baby... now it is Stew's)

From what I have read the getrag is not rebuildable. So I take it that if there is any kind of problem internally it must be replaced. Have you checked the shift cables to make sure they are functioning properly?

search/google for adjusting shift cables on SVT - this is the problem, not tranny itself

False. I had mine rebuilt @ 120k by my local mechanic.

Richard, I know a ton of mechanics on this side of town that you could take your car to. I am just not familiar with any on the west side of town. But as Chris said, it is more than likely your cables that need adjustment. Read this HOW-TO >>Clicky<< It goes into detail on how to do this. It's a simple and easy fix and it should be education for your son and yourself. I just know how much you love to work on cars lol. If you need any more help on this Richard, just PM me.

Thanks, Don...
I found that one yesterday, and passed it along to the mechanic... both were loose/almost off... I don't think he took the air cleaner off to get to them properly, so he is doing that today.... btw, is "Spring into Focus" coming up? The boy still has one, and I have a hatchback again.... (gti, though, lol....)

There are bushings in the shifter mechanism in the car that also go bad. I've had them to bad and you can't get all the gears.
