I agree, thanks for pointing that out to readers. Some transmissions failed under warranty in the rare cases where the owners switched to non-approved fluids with very low miles. Some autocrossers change tranny fluids when a car is only a few months old, so my buddy got burned. It eventually got to the point that the OEM was denying warranty claims when the fluid color was wrong while applying legal pressure to the lubricant manufacturer who was recommending the use of non-approved fluids. This happened at both Ford and Toyota. However many trannys didn't die until a decade or so due to many variables, including the point in time when the owner elected to switch to the unapproved fluid. Some people don't try alternate fluids until a vehicle is many years old. For this reason failure trends are very hard to uncover. Many owners were eventually affected. Some folks remained in denial for years until evidence became overwhelming. Then panic set in.

Yea and if you replace your aging fluid with fresh OEM fill it'll probably reach 300K mi without showing any wear symptoms. The fluid does degrade and pick up particulate, so wear rate begins rising after the fluid sees 75Kmi or so. By the time you reach 150K on the original fluid, it isn't doing a good job of controlling wear so remaining life is probably cut in half.

I guess I am gonna bring back a very controversial thread. I have a question specifically about Royal Purple. Before the hate starts back up I was recommended this stuff and am pretty set on using it. My questions is should I use the Max Gear stuff or the Syncromax stuff?

Thanks,
sbc

Lol. Yea sometimes I'm a sucker. Thats like buying a mobile 1 oil filter. All your paying for is a name. If its a quality wix filter then your all set. Eh, whatever. To each his own.

This stuff was recommended by some friends and I thought I would give it a shot. I'll keep the mobile 1 in mind tho for a future flush.

Thanks for the help Tom

Well nice to see this thread still exist lol. I also want to change what I said earlier about the gear oil. I'm doing a clutch job on a Mini Cooper S which has the same getrag trans as the SVT but the housing is different specifically the bell housing side. Well after some researching and finding out that all the Mini guys use Redline MTL synthetic transmission fluid to replace the factory fluid. It is has a GL-4 rating instead of the GL-5 rating which the Mini's Getrags says it must use a GL-4 fluid only so that's what I'm going to use for the Mini's Getrag. I went back to the dealer and got some of the "Ford Honey" we know so well for my SVT. So just wanted to update on the little bit of info on our what our Getrag brothers use.

Once it gets a little warmer outside I plan on changing out my trans fluid as I doubt it has ever been done on this car. Is >this< the stuff you're using and would recommend?

Post #19 Tom says:
"15-50 Mobile Syn"

So that would appear to be the kind

Hey Tom,

Since you're using Moble 1 Full Synthetic 15w-50, which is an engine oil, when would you recommend changing that fluid in the trans? Every 5k, 10k, 15k?

Thanks.
