Airbag light

Hi, i have a airbag light thats lit on my dash and as the new law states its now a mot failure i need to get it sorted.
I have a 2002 focus st170 which was a cat c car, my ex put a new passenger seat airbag in but was never conected, I have taken it to a garage for a diagnostic test and the codes that showed up where:
B1998 = This Relates to Passenger Side, Side mount Airbag Circuit Open
B1231 = This Relates to Longitudinal acceleration threshold exceeded - crash data memory full

I have been told that it needs to go to a ford garage to be re-programmed as it was a new airbag put in,
Ford garage was talking about having to have a new control module when i rang them
Just wondered what you guys think before i get ripped of by the dealer garage
Thanks in advance

I think i read some where that in the event of a crash involving air bag deployment the module would need replaced as it contains some of the sensors.

You at least need a new bag module, the 1251 code says it's been in a deployment, they write crash data at that time and cannot be used again without wiping them clean.
