under car heat shield

Okay well the heat shield under my car is ontop of my entire exhuest cause all the tabs have rusted away. What I want to know is will it be safe to just remove it or will it damage my gastank make it hotter on the inside or what not? I just want to know before i take it off an my gastank gets to hot and goes boom.

Ya know, mine fell off a few months ago and I drove with it rattling around back there... Drove me nuts. I finely stopped being lazy and fixed it. Used some harbor freight rivets and pinned that thing back up. It's working for now I may just rip the thing out if it falls down again.

Okay thats one thing then how much were the rivits? Also still want to know if I rip it down will it hurt anything?

I would view the heat shield as an important piece of equipment. It might be OK in the winter, but come summer exhaust heat will be radiating into the cabin of the car. It could damage and or melt the carpet and padding. You especially want to maintain any shielding around the gas tank. I would just do what it took to fix it back. Removal would be a mistake.

X2. I've seen nylon carpet catch fire with shield gone, the plastic tank will do the same.

Simple sheetmetal screws will hold the shield up too properly placed, use washers under them. Drill hole, start screw and then remove and blunt the tip if in floor area to not snag a shoe.
