shifter cables

Just did a clutch job (svt. With the getrag 6 speed). Put it all together. I didn't mark or note which shifter cable attaches to the transmission. White cable? Black cable? I think I have it backwards (will not shift into gear)
Anybody remember?
Had to leave it for another project. Have just a short time to trouble shoot.
Going to try to reverse the cables.
Thanks Ron

I don't know if it is the same but this is how they are on a regular zetec when viewed from the top.

I was just into this today. At the trans end of things, the top linkage and most easily accessable one is the side to side linkage. If that linkage adjuster has an orange button then that part is right. My understanding is there's a connection point between trans cables and shifter cables, meaning this could be up any number of ways, but with any luck they'll be color coded at both ends.

rdc767 this is your lucky night, I'm going out into the pitch black gloriously above freezing 37 degree weather to tear apart my car and give you real answers, because I'm at that appropriate level of drunken boredom. You can thank me later by accruing enough posts to give me rep. Good luck and god speed.

So they are color coded to an extent.

At the trans end, the top easier to get to linkage with the side to side movement should be black overall with an orange pushout for linkage adjustment. The bottom, noticeably harder to get to linkage is responsible for forward/back shifter movements and has a distinctly white portion.

In the car at the shifter, the forward/back shift cable with a white collar sits to the left of the side to side cable with a black collar.

Thanks Gordian and 6spd.
I was going to check it out tonight but I lost my keys to get there! Have to wait to Friday.
Just the short time I was playing with it on Monday. The side to side was working on top. But the front to back was not. This would explain why it wasn't engaging a gear. I'm hoping I just reversed the cable linkage if that's possible.
If I need cables best place?
Thanks for the quick response.

If you need new cables, they come as a pair. Ford wants about $160, CFM sells them for about $140. May find better prices elsewhere, I didn't look that hard when I was thinking of buying before.

Even if I found a better price, it's probably good karma to spend some money with CFM as they've been a long time supporter of the Focus.

Ok it's not the shift cables. Started and shifts ok. The speedometer rises and sounds like its transmission is spinning. Could this be the axle not seated correctly?
