2000 ZX3 - Interference engine?

My searching has gotten both answers, so I want something from the experts?

My timing belt broke when my mom was driving it. She reported no weird noise, bucking, or lockup, so I'm hoping.

Now if I can just yell at the place that sold me the car a year ago, who were supposed to check it all...

Ford calls it an interference engine for some reason but the base Zetec isn't really. Another guy here just gave the theoretically correct answer that valve float on high mileage engines could create an interference situation but it's extremely rare, if it's a question of scrapping the car of putting on a new timing belt, it's worth putting the money into a timing belt.

You could inspect the pistons and valves with a borescope to check for damage, but the borescope would cost more than the timing belt kit. You could also turn the crankshaft with a ratchet and if anything stops it you've got problems, but that's unlikely.

SVT= interference
Zetec stock= non-interference.
Zetec with aftermarket cams= interference
Zetec with Hi-comp pistions= interference

The Zetec 2.3 (SVT) is interference

Ford never made a 2.3 zetec, they made a 2.3 duratec though.

I guess not, but the SVT should be the only Zetec with the interference engine.
