The mags I've seen/read state anywhere from mid 16's to high 15's with mid 80mph traps (84-86). It's no where near fast, but 90 mph trap speed is decent improvement with just a drop in and rmm.

So how does mph figure into the equation. Travis and I have nearly identical mph at the 1/8th mark, and almost the same 1/4 mile time, yet his mph at the quarter is greater. How does it work? He has room for improvement in the beginning of the race, or I have room for improvement toward the end?

Who had a the better 60' time?

When I was racing my Eclipse and was racing a early 2000 Viper GTS I was trapping about 10mph less than the Dodge but our 1/4 mile times were nearly identical and my car was making up for a easy 50hp deficit with traction. My 60ft times were in the 1.7 range and the Vipers struggled to get traction (on street tires) and usually were in the 2.0-2.2 60ft times.

Only a MM and a drop-in? What kind of gas... 91+ Oct? I'm assuming you had a fair amount of wheel spin... 90 mph trap speed indicates that the car should be capable of mid to low 15's IIRC (It's been awhile since I've drag raced so I may be off... correct me if I'm wrong)
Yes, I am at 93 octane. Forgot to mention that. Not too much wheel spin cause they had a great track prep and I've learned to launch around 2000 rpms. Anything higher than that I got either wheel hop or no traction.

This, cause I'm wondering that myself. I'm still fairly new to drag racing (did it a bunch in the past in my 05' hatch, but never got too into it till now) and don't know how that fits either. I know I need to work on my reaction time for sure and know how to do that, but how can I improve my 60' time? If I do that, can I dip more into the 15.5 range? Maybe without other mods or stickier tires???

Here is the slip from when me and David (Streetfocus) raced...I'm on the left:

David is pwning me pretty good, but at the end it's like he just doesn't have the top end to keep the pace.

My ultimate goal is to break 14's now. Was to break 15's but, I did that lol I have my suspension coming in today and future mods will be sts, exhaust, headers and tune...That's probably going to be it on this car. Are 14's feasible with those mods in mind?

You'll need a little more to get into the 14s since a header and exhaust might only net you another 20whp at best and with no tune on the horizon isn't going to help but very low 15s are realistic.

My understanding has been that trap speeds are an indicator of power, (or what the car is capable of).

There are a few quarter mile calculators on the internet that will calculate estimated whp based on vehicle weight and trap speed, and also estimate ETs based on weight and power. HERE IS A LINK TO ONE

Using the 90mph trap and estimating a weight of 3050, the calc estimates about 173whp (seems a bit high but whatever), then using that weight and estimated HP, the calc estimated a quarter mile time of 15.1 @ 90mph.

I'm not sure what the assumptions are with this calculator (like 60' times)... MAYBE on an absolutely perfect run with a great launch you could hit that time, but I highly doubt that it's likely... It's difficult to get a good launch in a FWD, especially without slicks or drag radials. Seems like if you could get your 60's down in the 2.2 range, you could hit a 15.5. With an exhaust and header, I think high 14's are possible, but the limiting factor would be traction; a low 15 seems much more likely. For comparisons sake, 02-03 'bug eye' WRXs could run high 14's at 92-93 mph stock, but they could also pull 60' times under 2 seconds.

That makes sense, because he should have more power than me. If you compare our best timeslips (both a couple pages back in this thread), I have a better 60', a better 1/8th time, a higher 1/8 mph. Then at the quarter he wins with .03 better in the 1/4 and about 5mph faster! So what does that mean?

You were the better driver in that race, but he has the faster car. You out-launched him.

I got it. Thanks. On a side note to Travis, I think you can get into the 14s with the future mods you listed plus a tune with a great launch. We'll see!

14s will be hard with no tuning support, but I hope to see you do it. 14s was my goal in my SE, 12s is my nre goal for the ST haha. I'm looking for a drag tire setup as we speak!
