I said f it and swapped on the Goodyear Eagle GTs off my Cougar when I got my Focus. I love the handling and the warranty. But I don't see a problem with the Contitracs. My moms Taurus had them and they lasted 80k with no problems.

I guess I expect MORE from a tire.
Like my last cars tires..
One of the stock tire had four large nails in one. worn down outside, but sticking up inside when i replaced it. that tire never leaked air.
One of the nails was a thick spike sticking up two inches inside the tire. All four were completly through the tread into the inside.
And I drove that car (Contour SVT) at its maximum rated speed way more than once or twice on that tire full of nails... (it was the passenger rear, I never rotated tires.. I guess drifting around corners may have pick up the nails..
BF Goodrich Z rated babies... That car never had a flat tire.
Like i said, I expect more from a tire.
I would guess the wrap around bands are just weak on these OEM tires. so a hit breaks them and then nothing else in there to stop a failure.
Higher tire air pressures would help stop that happening.
(some might think lower would be better.. Nope, higher keeps the tire intact when it hits something. What take the brunt of the hit your tire was taking internally... is your suspension.)

I also guess I should have paid more attention to the tires when I bought the car as I was shocked to find they only have a 20,000 mile warranty and I already have 16,000 miles on the car. I definitely won't be putting these Michelins back on when it's time to replace them in a few short months.
What was the $318 tire, a Pirelli ?? Good sheet !
