Front brake pad WIRE retainer

Is the wire clip that sits on the outside of the caliper a required part?

My passenger side one was sticking out when I got to work and will have to wait until I get home to do anything with it. It appears the caliper will prevent anything from falling off, does this wire just reduce some movement of the other pad?

i would fix it because it holds the pad in their under hard braking and if you hit a big enough pot hole it could fall out on you

You talking about this thing? Its a anti rattle spring. pull it off, the re install it when you get home. Nothing will fall apart. It does not hold the pad in there, the pad is retained by the caliper and the bracket. all it does is hold the caliper in the correct place, to keep the noise down.

SAAB's have the same thing, i have seen the missing off cars for long periods of time with no major issues. But i would get it on there as soon as possible. Lube the ends so it does not seize in there.

I've never seen one before that was this way, usually they were integrated into the pad and clipped onto part of the caliper.

Without the clip your caliper is only held by the caliper slide pins and will make the caliper unstable under braking and eventually your pads will wear completely crooked. Ask me how i know....

It isn't an option, fix it!

What braking issues did you have caused by clips or lack thereof?

I had a total loss of braking at one point (pedal to the floor) caused by a clip that wasn't fitting onto the mounting properly (it was actually rubbing against the inside of the roadwheel).

I ran without mine for several thousand miles and had no issues. I keep a couple old ones off my used pads just incase I ever need on for some reason in the future.

They hold the caliper dead flat with much more force than none. The pads will begin to wear cock-eyed with springs missing, since the caliper can then raise up out of plane much easier.

the previous owner half-assed my retainer clips, so the pads didn't sit flush. Created the craziest wear pattern you've ever seen.
