Removing shift lever on transmission

Is it possible to unbolt the shift lever from the transmission if I remove the shift cable? Mine have been popping off and I would like to upgrade the hardware. I don't think the white cdble end comes off, but any info to the contrary would be amazing.

the cable ends do come off. simply pry out the orange push button on the cable end and the whole piece will come off the cable itself. heres the kicker.... once its off it stays off unless done very carfully...yet if your removing it id just replace it, you can get new ones from the ford dealer for around 20 to 30 if i remember correctly. and yet you can also remove the lever from the tranny, you have to remove the airbox, battery and tray, and driverside engine/trans mount to get to it but easy enough. while its all apart i would also remove the entire lever/turret assembly from the trans and remove the roll pin in the turret its self they are pretty known for failing and if it fails and shears off and your in gear....your screwed. simple fix just search roll pin fix. good luck
