Focus Won't Start

I'm sure people are tired of reading these but trying to use my cell phone to search isn't working
I have a 2001 Automatic Zetec Sedan (165,xxx)that has been sitting for almost 3 years(i know,i know) :( i tried getting it road worthy during that time but had issues financially, Anyways to the problem. The battery was recently replace as was the starter but it won't crank over. lights come on and chimes sound but as soon as i turn the key the lights kick off and the car starts clicking. is it possible that the alternator is bad? any help is appreciated

Check the power wires and ground wires. I'm assuming the battery is new or tested to be good?

The alternator will not figure into it until after the car starts up.
1) make sure your new battery is fully charged.
2) If that does not work the check positive and ground connections
-- remove neg connection at battery. Clean the connector and reattach to battery. Trace that negative cable(s) to the other ends. Disconnect those ends, clean the connectors and reattach.
-- do the same with the positive battery cable.

Inspect the cables to see if they have started to corrode inside the insulation. If so replace the corroded cables

Three years is a long time. I let a 65 VW bug set for two years, the points had turned to green powder. I replaced the points, put in a gallon of gas, jumped it and it started right up. Nothing like a simple machine.

Look a year ago is a long time. Your symptoms are of a bad connection. Turn a wrench or sit on your a**. Your choice.

Neutral safety switch? Will it shift from park when you apply the brake?

Edit for reading: Yep you need more juice, newer battery or not. Find some jumper cables, also just because a battery is "new" doesn't mean it's good. I've had more than one which were not good. Quality control isn't what it used to be in the battery department these days it seems.

His stated symptom is:

The battery was recently replace as was the starter but it won't crank over. lights come on and chimes sound but as soon as i turn the key the lights kick off and the car starts clicking.

Losing the lights and the starter clicking indicates not enough power, but he just replaced the battery. So what could be the problem? Answer: the power distribution system (the electrical cables and connections) have an issue. High resistance somewhere is preventing the transmission of the high currents required to start an engine.

Danny, you know full well that your problem is in the wiring, i.e...cables. Clean the corrosion off of the pos/neg cables and crank her up.....I guarntee that you're smokin a cable or two somewhere.
