Hacking the SYNC system on a 2012

Does anyone see the possibility of there being a third party effort to create images that could be flashed onto the SYNC system. Essentially the system is a computer and runs an OS. I would love to see some development in this area. Imagine the possibilities if that screen could be manipulated to do anything we want it to :).

I've been trying to find out if there would be a way to get my little (non-MFT) screen to show a backup camera feed if I put one in. It doesn't need to be great resolution (the aftermarket rearview-mirror kits aren't) so why not? Anyone look into this? I'm sure it would be an extensive process, but I'd love to give it a try.

With the technical knowledge I use at work every day, I don't think things like this would be all that hard to do. One of these days I'll see if I can get an extra Sync module so I don't kill my car.

That was a factory option so it might be possible. I have no idea what's needed. Maybe ask at your dealer if they can do it

I thought only the MFT version had a backup camera? I thought the regular Sync system only had backup sensors (beep when you get too close to something)?

Yeah, Sync W/Myford never came with a factory backup camera, just sync with MFT was available with the rear view camera.

Despite the fact that the 4.2" LCD is a full color screen and could theoretically support video if it had the proper inputs provided. Which it likely does not at the moment.

Yeah, the screen should support video - it has a startup animation so why wouldn't it? That being said, I don't see a reason for them to put the proper inputs inputs into it. But I don't want to tear my car apart to find out. So if anyone gets the nerve up and figures this one out, let me know. I'd also be interested to know how to get it to switch to the camera input when in reverse once it was wired correctly - you'd have to wire power to the reverse lights on the back end, and then figure out how to make it default to override any other input while it was on.

I'm not a fan of the clip-on rearview aftermarket screens, and I don't want to add an extra screen that's hanging out on my dash full-time. Help me, Focus Fanatics. You're my only hope.

The car I test drove had the backup camera and no MFT. It did also have active park assist so it might not be available sepperate from that

The screen itself is probably something simple like a LVDS connection to the module. The module, probably running some sort of ARM processor, probably has a built-in loading animation as part of the firmware/onboard memory. It might not even be in a standard "consumer-based" universal video format (i.e. MP4). Basically, what I'm getting at, is the module might not have capability of accepting/decoding video input to display on the screen.

That being said, if the screen actually is a LVDS connection, it would be super easy to create a bridge between the module and screen. As part of that bridge you add a video decoder and set it up to decode a backup camera in reverse and pass-through the Sync module all other times.

Please stop giving me ideas! I want to spend my money on mods... not hacking Sync! Seriously though... I think I could do a lot of this...
