We own a 2012 SE manual, and drive it @ 80 mph every chance we get. Yes, it's spinning at 3,500 rpm, but the engine seems to love it. No whine, no real noise issues, and great mpg.

We've averaged 35 mpg over the first 9,500 miles, according to the onboard computer. The last 500, with winter gas and more local driving than usual, has registered 32.5. Even if those readings are 10% optimistic, we're ahead of the game.

Would a six-speed manual be even better? No doubt. But we've been perfectly happy with the five-speed. So will you.

Just got done with a roadtrip in my 2013 SE with a 5 speed where it was spinning 3k~ rpm for right at 9 hours straight. As was said earlier, there was no droning, no weirdness, no noise. It was a pleasure, not tiring at all besides normal drive time bodily toll. In one tank with cruise set every moment I could at 75-78mph(50% at 75+, 40% at 65-70, and then 10% through small towns 35-55mph with lights), I averaged 34.5 mpg hand calculated during the day at 70*F, but once the sun went down, the temp was in the 40's, and the MPG drooped to 32 mpg.

Honestly, I've noticed that TEMPERATURE makes much more of a difference in MPG in this car than driving speed or octane while at highway speeds (65-80 mph averages). From 50*F down, expect worse and worse mpg, from 50 to about 80 is a sweet spot for maximum MPG, and then over 80 is like under 50, MPG will get worse as the temperature increases.

I have a '13 SE 5 speed manual, my gf has a '12 SE DCT.

Her DCT has 0 issues, my manual has 0 issues.

I prefer the car control that the manual offers.

At 70mph, RPMs are about 3k in the 5 speed, about 2700 in the DCT. We both see 38 mpg @ 70-75mph, 40 @ 65mph.

We both get the same MPGs.

1-3 are fairly short so you run them pretty quick, but you also don't have to downshift as much. Shifts are well-gated and not laboriously long. Clutch is light and easy, but still has feel compared to earlier Foci.

Also, the manual is slightly faster 0-60 than the DCT, could be because fewer and later shifts (not entirely sure).

2012 SEL, DCT, MFT loving it. I would just drive both and get which ever one you like best. I think the 2013's should have fewer issues. I also believe a lot of complaints about the DCT came from drivers not familiar with the computer automated six speed manual, add on the car's quirkyness at partial or light throttle inputs on 87 octane. A lot of shuddering and stuttering is the car trying to manage with low octane fuel and a high compression ratio, making up for that with techno wizardry that sometimes falls short, not necessarilly the DCT. Most of this is fixed by a quality premium fuel. Not to say there aren't folks with real issues with this system. I am loving mine and waiting of Ford to adapt a DCT/DSG to the ST, and then I will consider buying one of those.

By the same token one could argue that you would seriously be an idiot to buy a Mustang GT with the (MT82) manual transmission.
Something wrong with the manual in a mustang?

Apparently MT82s were breaking like crazy.

BUT the investigations went nowhere because the very same transmission was also sitting in the Boss 302 and people were not complaining about that.

They were made in China for 1-2 years, Ford has since switched manufacturing to Germany (where all the other transmissions are made).

Google 'MT82' and you can get a good idea. This was a big issue.

Because many people were having problems with their 2011 Mustang GT (with the MT82 6 speed manual), does that mean that you should never buy a Mustang with a MT82? I hope not.

My point was that it would be incredibly stupid on the part of Ford not to recognize and correct recurring mechanical issues (as this cost them big $$$ in warranty repairs not to mention the damage to their reputation).

We know that a leaking seal was the cause of many of the issues with the DCT. Has Ford improved that part from the earlier production cars? Of course they have.

I would only even consider the DCT if there was some reason you couldn't drive the manual.

Yes it's too bad it's not a 6 speed... but it's also not really a performance car and the manual makes it more enjoyable.
