Just bought a Focus and need some advice

Caution noob questions.

Picked up a 2004 2.3 ZTS today, fully loaded power windows, automatic, blaupunkt head unit etc etc. Got a great deal on it too.

My question is what are some typical trouble areas for both the motor/Trans and this generation Focus. I'm more familiar with the 2.0 Zetec although the 2.3 is a Duratec? Correct? Any thing I should know or particularly pay attention to?

Also does anyone have links to PDFs of repair manuals or any kind of literature for the first gen US Focus. That stuff is always great to have.

Thanks for any input that can help me out!

Also is there a place that sells reasonably priced headlights these on this car are faded. Also where can I find the SVT grill reasonably?

Ok enough questions for now.

you should be able to find a Haynes Repair Manual at your local auto store. also i say if your headlights are faded, spend less money and polish them up some!

Moved to "MK1 Focus". Maintenance questions can be answered in the General Technical Chat area and performance modification questions can be answered in the Duratec Performance section. The MK1 Focus section is for discussion of exterior upgrades etc...

Wow 172 views and no useful input.

Knowing potential problem areas for this car would be really useful.

there aren't really any trouble areas on the duratec/trans. the engine uses a timing chain, so more durable than a belt. Change all the fluid/filters as you should with an used car (trans, engine, fuel filter ect...) You have a rare motor combo, the 2.3l is a strong motor and responds well to mods; anything for duratec will fit. If you want more response and feel out of the auto, look into getting a tune.

There is not going to be a set of repair manuals in digital form, however we do have a decent size list of how-to's

Read the sticky threads at the top of the different sections and you should have a pretty good idea what to look for and what to change. These two sections will be a good place to start reading:

Duratec Perofrmance
Wheels, Tires, Brakes & Suspension

If you don't want to buy used, you can build a set of your own for a pretty reasonable price. You might need a used part here or there but the bulk of them would be new.

Amazon has the Depo branded Mach HID replacements for ~130 each:
>Passenger Side<
>Drivers Side<

Inexpensive but decent quality D2S bulbs from TRS:
>Morimoto 3Five Bulb Pair<

You're also going to need:
- ballasts: Hella Gen4 5DV 008 290 00
- igniters: 5DD 008 319
- running light sockets (dont have a part #)
- high beam bulbs: H7
- city light bulbs: W5W/194/2825
- turn signal bulbs: 3457

OEM SVT EAP headlights are real nice. If you get any Ebay lights, I would strongly suggest that you get clear bra material for them as well. The clear coat chips off way too easy, and without clear bra, they'll be pitted in no time (i've gone through half a dozen sets of ebay lights, and now stick to OEM as much as possible). As mentioned, I would suggest doing the headlight restoration mod if you want to hold off buying new lights for now.
