The same can be said for the actual glass. I always use 70% as the number for clear glass. It's usually +/- a few percentage points of 70. Even different meters can read the tint differently. I've had a car metered by 3 different cops, all on the same tint job, within weeks of each other and ended up with 3 different readings.
So , since they told me it would be 38% , since I wanted it legal, should I ask them to meter it and if it's too low re-do it? I was hoping to avoid being hassled by cops. But if you're saying that even if it were 38% that a cop's meter might read it lower anyways?

On the other hand I see people driving around with glass like black holes and they aren't being pulled over.

A cop's meter might read it lighter too. Your laws are 35%. Your tint is an estimated ~30% or so. It could meter a little lighter or even a little darker, but either way, in the odd chance that you do get stopped for tint, if you metered 30% the cop is probably going to let you go. I've had a car metered at 17% here in Texas where the law is 25% and was just given a warning, and that was by a State Trooper aka Texas Tint Nazis.

Cops who do a lot of tint stops get good at spotting tint that looks too dark and if yours is between 30-35%, you likely won't ever even be stopped for it.

Not that you've seen. I drove with limo tint on everything I owned for many years. I got stopped many times and paid a good bit of money in tickets, but it didn't deter me for a long time and I kept on going with it.

Not to be contrary, but there absolutely is a visible tint on 2013SE, with basic equip package. Perhaps it varies.

your right it is visible. i got everything tinted with a windshield strip. the rest of the windshield is still tinted from the factory. you can tell when you look out the window with the glass down and compare it to looking through the windshield.

Oops! I have 35% tint all around on mine which puts me right around 23% visible.

VA law is 35% with a medical exemption form (50 front 35 rear otherwise).

No wonder my tint looks so darn dark lol
