Reading all this makes me happy id didnt get a MZ3 Sky activ

That was actually my first pick before i tried the focus but not being able to have NAV and the horrible interior pushed me to look elsewhere

Other than a few rattles and buzzes i love this car

I really only considered the Focus and the Mazda 3 Sport when looking at cars (The Imprezza too, but, not reallyy). I knew both cars were very similar and I was more impressed by the Mazda3 originally on the test drive but that was simply because the salesman let me have a much, much more aggressive drive.

When it came down to it, the extra $4,000 for the Mazda didn't seem worth it, especially since the interior really felt "cheap" to me and I would be losing the touch screen and nav of the Focus.

That said. The Mazda 3 hatch looks damn good from the outside.

I traded in a 2010 Mazda 3 2.0, 5 speed, to get a 2012 focus hatch, auto, sport package.

The Mazda was a child's toy compared to the Focus. A fun little economy car, but the focus has better quality and technology all the way around.

And the focus has comfy sport seats that are made to hold a man (6'2", 220), not a 5'5" 130 lb japanese test driver. I was rear ended twice and the seats in the mazda broke both times. The stock suspension in the Mazda was nice, however the disk brakes were small and weak. Also, the 2.0 engine sucked a ton of gas for the small amount of power it put out. The DCT in the Focus was what finally sold it for me, although if they made a 6 speed manual it would have been tempting as well...

I too looked at both when I was considering a new car purchase. I owned a Mazda 6 a few years back, that got traded on the wifes new vehicle a year ago. I was hell bent on another Mazda, but once I tested the Focus Hatch, I couldn't justify the price difference. The mazda hatches around here were going for well over $20k, I got my SE Focus for $16,350, and after my trade I was OTD at $14.5. I love the Focus, fun to drive and gets great mileage, just what i was looking for in a new car!

My wife just got a new Mazda 3 hatch with the Skyactive engine and auto transmission. I just drove it. Here is how it compares to mine (remember they have the same chassis with evolutionary differences between them):

Engine/power: Smoother at idle than the Focus and very quiet, but very noisy on start up. Power is good, but not as powerful as the Focus. Probably closer to its actual rating where the Focus is underrated.

Transmission: Despite Mazda claiming a sporty feel, it is not as crisp and quick as the DCT, but is smooth. Goes into too high of a gear in town, but usually picks the perfect gear on the open road. DCT=quick and sporty, Skyactiv auto=smooth and non-sporty.

Interior: Roomy, but materials quality and design is not as inviting as the Focus. Instrumentation is lacking. Stereo good and no door rattling from the speakers. A lot more road and wind noise than the Focus. The Mazda lacks the rear inner fender felt, etc. and seems to have less interior insulation to save weight.

Exterior: IMHO, and my wife's, it is not as sharp as the Focus. Fit and finish good and projector lights work great.

Handling: VERY STIFF ride even with its 16" tires. Stiffer than my SEL premium with 2010+ MS3 springs and 17" tires. It must have very stiffly valved dampers.
Body roll is minimal with some under steer. I would rate it between my SEL when stock, and now with the Steeda rear sway bar and MS3 springs.

Fuel mileage: I see no advantage over the Focus yet.
Im going to buy a new hatch soon. I just rented on wed a 2013 Sky hatch to compare it to my 1300 mile Focus ride last Sept and your opinions are spot on and exactly what I was going to write here. Did about 500 miles. Focus is a better car and feel its more refined. The 2014 3 will have to do a better job to compete with the Focus. With more weight being shaved , somehow I can't see the noise problem going away in the Mazda. The cloth seat was utter and pure torture, the Focus seat was better, but not that great , think I will spring for leather no matter what I end up in. My friend hated the Mazda and told me not to buy it. The brakes also were not as good as the Focus, and i knew going in there is not as much HP, seems like those highway passes take just a bit longer. we drove from Whittier to Paso Robles and back. Also drove the Fiesta and Focus St models last Sat at the Rose Bowl Ecoboost challenge and the Fiesta St was awesome. The Focus St was also awesome but so spoiled with great gas mileage in my Escort I just can't stomach premium fuel and barely getting 30MPG. I'd say the Mazda and Camry were the biggest disappointments of driving 8 cars this week. The Camry was godawful ! I'm not really sure why all the fuss about the Mazda 3.

The regular Titanium rims are a pain to clean to say the least; the 5 spoke 18s seem like a dream in that regard.
Second that, they're a pain to clean and to get a rag in between the spokes. Try waxing your wheels, since I did I just hose the gunk off with very minimal wiping.
