I've noticed that while the weather is cold the clutches engage like a manual tranny until they get warm (I believe it's called clutch chatter). The "clutch chatter" or whatever it's called, happens on warm days when you start from 0mph with a moderate amount of gas. If driven like a granny or a lead foot the clutch transition from 0 to whatever, and from 1st gear to whatever gear is smooth (1st to 2nd or 1st to 3rd or 4th).

Periodically I change from auto mode to manual mode just to see what gear it's in. At 30mph it's in 4th gear and at 35mph it will change to 5th or will let you change to 5th gear. Depending on the speeds traveled while switch gears, it will downshift automatically.

Unless you have the later 12B37 programming or the 2013 programming you can get into 6th gear at 35 mph either in drive or in manual shift mode.

5th gear at 35 is over 1500 rpm, 6th is only around 1300 rpm. 40 mph in 6th is right around 1500 rpm.

The 2012/2013 trans is best looked at like it has two gear boxes and 2 clutches , these 2 gearboxes work as one tho
One clutch controls the odd gears (and reverse) and one clutch controls the even gears then there is 2 input shafts (one inside another) one for one clutch and odd gear 1,3,5 and one for the even clutch and gears 2,4,6

It looks to me like the ECU activates the gear that coming next even before the clutch is in gauged which would allow for the smooth shifting , this is a very interesting set up and I cannot wait for tuning software to play with this more

This is new stuff for Ford but isnt new to the performance world or even hyper cars like the Bugatti Veyron which works off the same basic ideas

I think it will be a long time before there is a performance clutch for this car and it will be very very very very costly if there is one , I am going to send an extra one I have to a friend that builds clutches and see what he says

Is there any way you could get pictures and post? Mine is being replaced now hopefully I can get a look at my old clutch assembly.

drjkel, it's very useful. I wasn't able to make it to the shop when my transaxle was out. I really wanted to get a look at it.

Some upgrades would be great, right now it's like riding with someone new to driving a manual. When I drive i can control the gas and brake enough to smooth it out but my wife, never having driven a manual before, is all over the place.
