My friend taught me to drive stick just a little, then I rented a car (Renault Megane) in France and drove through Switzerland to Germany. I kinda finished learning as I went (sorry Europcar)

IMHO, buying an automatic muscle or high performance car ruins the whole driving concept of the car.

I agree.. Idc if your transmission can shift faster then God. I like the feeling of shifting. I like the whole idea that if I want I could redline all day. Why would I? No reason.. But I like the option! Kinda like 4x4 you rarely need it in d.d. But when u do.. u like the option of it being there.... Plus it gives the car a more race car feel then even newer paddle shifts..

The DSG (automated manual) option for the GTI is the performance option.

It is faster than the conventional manual.
It is more reliable than the conventional manual.
It can handle FAR more power than the conventional manual.

I wouldn't have bought my GTI had it been a conventional manual honestly...

Except the DSG has proven faulty multiple times an VW doesn't cover gearbox issues... Shit not so long ago they had to update the mechatronix (sp) because of all the faults it was generating... A lot of people are complaining that when a dsg tranny goes out. You are SOL... That the repairs are outrageous.. Have you had ur clunking issue shifting into 6th gear? Yeah common DSG issue that VW won't admit to. And they say it won't affect performance.. Which makes me wonder wth is that. So many electronics nowadays controlling ur car takes away the driving experience. Idk my opinion of course. I know many f1- and high en sports cars are converting over to DSG-like tranny's.. But a true sportscar is one that comes with a manual.. Of course a computer can do math for us..much faster and 100% accurate but Does that mean we should stop teaching it in school?

You are mistaken.

There was a recall on certain mechatronics units where an internal bushing wore out prematurely. VW covered it and extended the warranty on those transmissions out a number of years. My car is covered under that warranty. So far I have no symptoms. If I do, all I do is take it in and my local dealer will verify it and replace it. Simple as that.

There have been only a handful of cases on any of the mkv boards I'm on where a transmission has needed to be completely replaced. I'm talking like a dozen or less here. Yes that does cost a pretty penny. But ask me if I'm worried about it and I'll tell you no, absolutely not.

On whirlpool.net they stated that there was an update to the software because it was faulty. The recall was a separate issue..

You have become a fanboy of VW because you own one. But keep in mind I also owned one and had nothing but issues with it. I am glad you are not having issues at the moment. I would hate to buy a vehicle and realize there are issues... But DSG has been proven to withstand a lot of power true.. And it is fast at shifting true.. But it's not all bells and whistles.. How does DSG react in winter? In stock form can you redline truly redline without it shifting for u? And how much abuse can it take?

And I still stand by my post of just because a computer can replace a motor skill don't mean I have to conform to it... Especially in a what feels like a sports car environment
