Everyone, great information for me. Maybe a crazy question, . . . but without a service record, is there any way to determine if a timing belt has been changed in past year or two, or 20-40k miles ago? Assuming belt is tight and no shreds visible, are there indicators of a belt needing replacement before an unforeseen break?

Aside from the 2 you are now aware of, nope.

But since there is no record of it and the ride is over a 100K. I would suggest just doing it for good measure and piece of mind. Probably one of the worst things to happen to an SVT. Some have come out to be catastrophic others couple of lucky breaks.

I have had both. A lucky break and a catastrophic one with my SVT. Thankfully, it wasn't that much to fix both times.

What was the "catastrophic" one, if you can share?

Sure, the 2nd time my T-Belt decided to go out ... we were heading to Austin, TX for our annual Focus Round-Up (Large gathering of foci from all across the state).

Well, on our way up from Houston, about halfway the car puffs out tons of smoke then dies. One Loud bang.

Had to get it towed back to Houston ... which by the way is cheaper than getting a towtruck in the city ... lol.

Anyways, SleepyBoy and I took it apart and found out that I had bent ALL of my Intake valves. Yup. After getting alot of consultation about it, I decided to get another engine and rebuild. Well, we took the head off this one and took both heads to the machine shop. Surprisingly, both heads are in good condition. And the machinist asked me which one do I want to re-build. Tempted to do both, I just asked him to do one.

After a couple of days at the shop, picked up the head and back to the car. It took myself and 2 other great members in our group (Zab and Izzy) 7 hours to put the car back together.

It was a great experience and **KNOCK ON WOOD** still runs today. One and half year later.

The bottom end was fine. And the pistons had small knicks from the Valves, but nothing else bad other than that.

Being the photog that I am ... I did take some photos:
This is the bent valves

A shot of the old motor and new motor in background

Small knicks on the piston head

New machined head

A shot of putting it back together. This is the Cam alignment tool here.

You can't miss the loud knocking noise coming from the front when you turn sharp it usually the worst. take it in before you drive it too much on it or you will be stranded.
$240 axle rebuild and his labor

The factory belts are made in Italy and are definitely not Goodyear.

TukaniSVT, thanks for the story and the photos. Glad that the ending, after the anguish, has been good. What caused all of the intake valves to get bent?

Sleepyboy, is there a name on the belt anywhere, or some other kind of marker, where you can attempt to find out if the TB is original. Would be great help to anyone buying used SVT without service records. And if so, is the "marker" visible without taking the belt off?
