2002 ford focus lx SOHC.
I was driving my focus and randomly decided it didn't want to go anymore. Coasted to side of road and shut it off. Tried to turn it back on and it just sat and cranked. Fuel pump and timing belt is just fine. Next things to try are replacing the upstream o2 sensor up and down are bad and have been for months. Crank angle sensor and coil pack. Which could cause it most likely not to start and could randomly go out while driving like that? When I try to start the car it's a soft steady crank sound. Please and thank you! P.s. took off the valve cover and look how gunked up it is. Def time to change the oil.

You have the Focus SPI engine before you do anything do a compression test there very bad to drop the valve seats and loose compression

With what you said i would not start throwing parts at it, especially O2 sensors. There are ways to check or have checked things that will eliminate the guess work. A compression test would be something i would start with like Tom said, just because the nature of that engine.

I don't think that would prevent the gas pedal from going down, but yeah, it seems bad.

Let's ask the obvious question,
IS the gas pedal working properly now? Moving the throttle body pulley properly? (i always start with the "stupid" questions....) Luck! |

Seem to be getting?

There are tools to test for spark, yet the simplest is to take the plugs out then connect them to their wires & lay them on a grounded metal surface & crank the engine (helper needed) so you can look for the spark at the plugs. The valve cover is NOT grounded (supported by rubber gaskets) so find another handy spot! Jumper cables are great for this, though car size are a bit unwieldy.... Cheers! |
