will do! where about would the ground connect? im sure someone here has had to dig it out before. also, couldnt i just clip the ground at the harness behind the bulb and eliminate the digging? dont recall seeing a green/yellow ground though.

I would probe the lightbulb socket rather than dig around

grounded the wire, worked. now my question is since im showing it going to ground with my meter that tells me it may be hanging on by 2 strands. where do those grounds come together? im sure someone has torn down the interior for sound spray or something.

those lights probably share a common ground and are being activated as part of the circuit through another ground. Check for a broken ground.

the ground is located right below the latch pin under the the plastic trim, at least in sedans and hatches.
go to post 14 , pic 3, in this thread. also notice the main wiring harness connectors are located on the drivers side in the rear corner. (there are also some pics not showing, but the links can be clicked)

This might be a good time to investigate/repair the license plate lights. Those can cause some problems with the other lights, and are typically corroded due to water getting in the hatch trim.

There should be a harness grounding point on the driver's side. The harness comes down the driver's side, then goes up and over to the passenger side. IDK if grounding is repeated on the passenger side.

There is a beautiful picture of the wire damage inside the umbilical

I had a 2004 Focus wagon and the rear lights bases would burn out. Found out there are two different bulbs that will fit in there, yet the current draw is larger on one hence the heat. I was going to install the bulb with the light current, but would give less light, but the wagon got totaled by a DWI while parked
