2001 ZX3 124k (Suggestions)
So I recently picked up a 2001 Focus ZX3 5 Speed with 124 on the clock. I noticed the carfax showed timing belt changed at 103k and coil pack at 105k. It appears the valve cover gasket is leaking which is a easy fix and the previous owner disclosed. But for you experienced guys with some miles under your focus. What else should I be looking for or replacing for maintenance or possible trouble spots with this mileage?
Here she is by the way. Clean for a 01 I think. |

well I would first decide what you want to do with the car. Do you want to put money into a 12 year old car or are you just going to drive it into the ground.
At 124k chances are the struts and mounts are ready to be replaced.

I would just drive it then.
I had a 95 Mystique with a Zetec and 5-spd that I got in 2000 with 86k miles on it. I sold it in 2012 with 228k. I left the engine completely stock, but I drove it. Timing belt was done at 104k and then when the tensioner pulley split into 3 peices at 222k. I repalced the struts at 130k, should have also done the mounts. The original alternator finally went around 220k and I had to have the flex pipe section of the exhaust replaced and then the resonator cut out at about the same time. Everything else was orginal still. Other then that I just drive the car. I know there was something else going on because of I got on it to much before the engine fully warmed up it would stall out and not start back up right away. Either way the car got driven to Florida and back and should have over 250k on it now.

Thanks for the info guys. I think for the most part the guy before me took care of it. Carfax shows oil changes and what not every 4k miles. And he was honest about the valve cover gasket. I wish I could have bought it from him vs the dealer. But all in all, feel like I got a fair shake. Car is very clean for a 2001.

If it hasn't already had the fuel pump replaced, I would look at that too. Check post #77 in the link below if you ever notice any over heating. Mine is a 2002 and these are some things I remember lots of folks talking about in the early days.
