Should I dump my Focus??
Hey guys, I would like your opinions if possible. Let me start by saying that I actually like my Focus a lot and haven't had any issues yet other than when I have my AC on high, there is some rattling going on. I haven't brought it on to be checked out yet.
And I will also say that I have been defending the Focus around here a lot lately. With that being said, I wanted to explore my options and get your opinions. My 2012 Focus is about 8 months old now and it only has 7,900 miles. I have the DCT that everyone seems to be bashing lately. It's an SEL with the 16" alloys, the upgraded Sony sound system and MFT. All of the talk here about the DCT, reliability of the car, long term durability concerns, etc have gotten to me. If I were to dump it, is now the time since the miles are very low? Should I dump it? Should I not dump it? Playing devil's advocate here....if I do dump it, what is my best course of action? I shouldn't do a trade and buy scenario should I? Should I sell private to maximize how much I get for it and then just buy another car? Any advice and opinions are welcome! |

I think that if you have no major problems, keep it. It's still relatively new, and you'd lose a lot of money trading it in now.
If you did, get pricing info. When my mom got her Fusion, we got the dealer's offer and a carmax offer to buy it, we chose carmax because it was $2k more.

It's working, why get rid of it? You're still under warranty and it's still new. You'd take a large loss now for no reason.

It all depends upon what you paid for and owe if anything on this car. But you most times take a loss on a new car when trying to dump it so soon after purchasing it, even if you paid cash for it.
If I paid attention to the reliability reviews of my 07, I would have gotten rid of it a long time ago. I would just keep it and take care of it, and it should serve you well.

Chances are your gonna take a huge loss money wise. Unfortunatley the resale value of the focus isnt that great. even with the low miles, you wont be getting much. Look on kbb.com or nada.com for current values.
And you said you like the car and are not having any problems then why get rid of it? This guy has 105k on his, and sounds like little to no problems http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=306727

Thanks for the quick responses guys! You are right, I'm not having any major issues and I do enjoy the car.
Just for reference, I paid $20,800 out the door with tax, license and everything. I sold my Xterra and put about $9,000 down on the Focus. I owe about $9,000 on my loan. So should I just keep it? |

I would keep it. I've been contemplating trading mine in as well. But it'll be a hit. I paid ~18K after taxes etc but in the end I'd be getting maximum ~14K$ for a trade in. And that's if I'm lucky. I've not been experiencing any issues with mine either, so I might just end up keeping it.

Don't let all the grips and complaints you read about on this forum sway you. This forum only represents a very, very small percentage of Focus owners. But to be honest.......I was not 100% comfortable buying a new model car (mine is a 1/12 build). So I went the lease route. If she is going strong in 3 years, I may then buy it out right. I really like this car. Just hit 10k miles and no mechanical issues. Just some of the software bugs in the MFT.
