zetec to zetec swap questions

I recently aquired a 2001 focus zx3 with a over heated zetec engine with automatic transmission. I am going to install a zetec engine that is paired with a manual transmission. what exactly do i need in order to do this successfully? do i need to change all the wiring or just the ecu?

I suppose this is a dumb question but why don't you just hang the good Zetec on the auto tranny in the zx3, then sell it and buy a car that has a manual in it? Then take the overheated zetec and sell it as a core to some engine rebuilder?

It seems to me the problem isn't going to be the ECU and wiring as much as all the mechanicals involved in putting a clutch pedal and shifter console in an auto - your going to have to find a donor car for all those parts.

There's tons of manual transmission Focus LX's that started out life with a SOHC engine that dropped valves and grenaded itself, that are in wrecking yards - surely you could find one of those - and that swap is far more commonly done.

Speaking as someone who has copleted all of the Zetec type swaps successfully, the swap is not hard. It will take 2 mechanicaly capable people about 5-6 full days.

parts needed
Zetec engine
MTX75
mtx flywheel
clutch assy
shifter and linkage for the mtx year
ECU
complete mtx wire harness under hood
mtx dash harness
ecu harness complete to the gas tank
mtx axles
Manual brake resevoir and clutch line
MTX pedal assy

2001 and earlier harnesses are not compatible with 2002-04 harness. If using an 02+ the left side interior harness will be needed also.

Well let me tell you what exactly my circumstances are. My daily driver is a 2001 focus zx3 with zetec and manual tranny. In August I bought an SVT for $500 from insurance auto auctions (with a parts only title). My plan is to fully swap all the SVT stuff into my daily driver zx3. Therefore I will have all the parts that I need to put into the other focus that I acquired. I was really just wondering if I needed to pull the dash to change all the wiring and all that or could I just install the engine and tranny, clutch pedal, ecu? BTW, thanks for y'alls responses and your time.

Because your dealing with a pre 02 yes all the wiring needs to be swapped.

I've done an 01 Zetec to 03 SVT swap. Without changing the interior harness the subwoofer power was lighting the left and center brake lights. lol

The swap is basically the same You will need all the SVT specific parts. Header, exhaust, passenger side engine mount, power steering line, axles, ect...

If your swapping from manual to a auto or the other way make sure and replace the crank position sensor bracket with the right tranny. They are different and can only be swapped with the tranny separated from the motor due to it being on the inside of the bell housing on the motor. If you forget to do that you won' get any spark and will have to pull the tranny to swap it out. I know cause it happened to me before.

Ok I'm sorry let me clarify it cause it is confusing. There is a total of three cars. 02 SVT, 01 zx3 with 5 spd, 00 zx3 with auto. First off, I want to swap all the SVT things I into the 01 zx3. I am aware that I need to swap EVERYTHING. From the 01 zx3, I will have the engine and tranny, dash all the wiring, etc left over because I will have pulled that out. So the 00 zx3 is the one with the overheated engine and my idea was to install the engine left over from my 01 zx3 with the manual tranny into the 00 zx3 with the auto tranny. Now do I have to completly swap the dashes and all the wiring or can I just drop in the engine and the clutch pedal and shifter assemblies? Thanks again for you alls time.

Unless you want a push button start you will need the dash harness. Otherwise you will not have a clutch position switch, and by removing the ATX you will rmove the nuetral safety switch.
