trunk wont close. suspect related to key

Just bought a 03 focus. Discovered the trunk will not latch closed. Tried to turn the key and it doesn't work at all. put the key in, but it refuses to turn. I suspect that is the problem. Could i be right?

The latch inside the trunck lock may be already 'out' or in the locked position. So it is hitting the "U" shaped latch. Check in the trunk at the lock and try to push the locking part/pin back while turning the key.
It may have gotten damaged by slamming the trunk down.. and is why the key is jammed...

Since you just bought the car, you don't know the history.

I wouldn't be surprised if the hatch is not keyed to the same key as the rest of the car.

The latch is motorized, if you push the hatch unlock button on the dash, does it make a motor "buzzerp" sound? If it does not, then I would go with the assumption that the latch motor may need to be replaced, check craigslist for a focus being parted out, around here you can buy a complete hatch for $50.

Or latch assembly could just be jammed from pissed off people trying to force it shut instead of thinking it out.....................sometimes a simple screwdriver stuck in the right place can render it useable again, of course original problem will have to be fixed, often just the side bumpers or latch getting out of adjustment.
