best buy longterm/reliability 2003 1.8 focus-diesel or petrol

Hi.

I am considering buying a 2003 ford focus 1.8. I do not know whether to buy a 1.8 petrol or a 1.8 tdci diesel ?

I have been told to avoid diesel mondeos of this age, and am wandering if this applies to focus's to?

I can buy both cars for around the same price, but my main concern is reliability and possible repair costs(considering the age of the car)?

Any advice please.....

We don't get diesel Focuses here. But if the diesel Focus is anything like the diesel Golf...

Get the diesel. They can run forever, and are far more economical. My 2.0L petrol Focus struggles to get 35MPG on a perfect day.
