It comes down to you have to decide what you want and what you want to spend
small turbo spools very fast and add ball bearing to that and adds a few hundred rpm faster spool small turbo you could be spooled by 2600 rpm but wont make power above about 260+/- hp , bigger turbo may spool at 3500 and will make much bigger hp and all this done at 9.0 compression You have to keep in mind the fuel we have these days is crap you start at 11.5 compression and your already pushing the limits of 93 big time , then throw boost to that and its a ticking time bomb Tom

I have run engine dynamometers for over 10 years, 11.6:1 and boost on 91-93 octane pump gas will not happen. Now on 100 plus octane unleaded race gas, or E-85 is another story. You will reach a limit with cylinder pressure where you will start breaking factory pistons and rods. There is a reason why turbocharged engines from the factory are in the 9:1 to 10:1 compression range. Sorry if you think Tom or myself are wrong, you are more than welcome to try it on your own.

Hate to bump this thread, but how lofty of a goal would 350hp be on E85? I've been looking at building a 2000 hatch and replacing the Zetec with the Duratec. I know it would be much easier making 350 out of the Duratec and it would be much more streetable. The only thing that I'm concerned about is that if I plan on making that much power, I'll probably be giving up throttle response with a huge turbo and I want to keep a decent handling balance so I don't want to go overboard on power.

Unless you are planning to depart Virginia soon, or your car staying in Norfolk, I'd advise against tuning for E85. There just aren't that many E85 stations out there.

Don't tune for e85.
The duratec can handle 350whp on pump on stock internals (on a dynojet). Both the zetec and duratec are perfectly fine on the street at that power level. You won't have crazy lag. With the right turbo you could have full spool at 3200rpm. |

idk bout the duratec but the zetec can not handle that much whp on stock internals, and im pretty sure the same for duratec, gonefhsn blew his 2.3 on 22psi wich ball park would be that hp or more. for stock internals you never want to go above 250 so you can have a good fun time and not kill the motor

That and no one makes a sc for the duratecs, so youd have to start at scratch... felix is right, there is a reason the aftermarket manufacters are only running turbos on their d's

Maybe I misread the posts but it seemed like locOgringO might want power to start building at lower rpm's that some turbos can do. Some sc setups can make serious power increases right off of idle. Availability of parts, individual mechanical skills, and tuning probably make the sc deal a non-starter. OEM, and aftermarket add on companies like Saleen and Rousch sometimes offer sc.
