Here are the specs of the 2 filters as. As you can see the filters are the same save for the height.

In any case my Malibu had an issue with the cam timing system. The tech at the dealer asked me about how long the oil was in the car. I showed him my test results from Blackstone Labs. His response to me was that there was no way the problem was caused by an oil related issue.

You've obviously done your homework and this makes perfect sense. My caution was directed at those who don't exercise the same level of diligence and may assume because a filter can be screwed onto an engine it's automatically appropriate.

The motorcraft#'s are FL910 & FL400 which work great as does a FL842.

I did a little more research. Looks like the FL400S has a 20psi bypass. The FL910S has a 14psi bypass filter.
Conclusion: Motorcraft FL-910S 14psi bypass
Purolator PL10241 12-15psi bypass
only use Purolator PL20195 12-15psi bypass if you want a longer filter.
