Dive into the menus. While the MFT display does dim with the gauges, it does also have its own brightness control. Maybe the standard SYNC does as well, it just may be buried pretty far down into the menus.

I wonder how many people Ford and Microsoft have working on the Sync system? I had an Alpine I installed in my last car that did not have a CD player. It was designed specifically for use with an iPod and worked intuitively when it came to selecting different inputs or the radio. I think the people working on the Sync may have Inattentional Blindness in that they have expertise on how to use the thing compared to others that are not as familiar with it. Kind of like finding spelling errors in what you write, your brain sees what you wanted to write not what you did. The people working on are so familiar with it they do not see the issues others can have.

In any case sometimes the Sync will play the iPod seamlessly when returning to the car sometimes it forgets the iPod is plugged in even though the iPod shows it recognized by the Sync. Sometimes you have to unplug the iPod to re-establish the connection. Then you have to go thru the menus again to select it which are hard to navigate.

Another issue is the Sync will display what was playing when the car was turned off even though you have removed the iPod. When this happens it kind of locks up with really no indication on what to do. Then you get lost in the menus trying to choose the iPod again.

Holy crap if you thought the user interface on the car was bad, try the Sync My iTunes. Not sure what it is doing but it is chewing on my 5000 song iTunes library maybe...or it is just locked up.

All sync my itunes seems to do is destroy id3 tag data and I then had to repair them all manually in itunes. It still didn't stop the bad media messages on tracks that work just fine most of the time, but sometimes it still errors out on the tracks.

Thanks for the tip. I canceled it and it gave me the option to discard changes which is what I did.

Not sure I understand what the Sync My Phone and Volume programs do.

BTW, went on some errands today and the Sync was able to recognize the iPod each time I got back into the car......Hmmm happy and surprised and congratulating a system for working properly.

Yeah it basically corrupted any data in the id3 tag and put in junk like track 1 and unknown artist and unknown song title instead of keeping what was entered.

Sync my phone probably tries to do something similar to make sure the names don't have funny characters in it, but it may end up deleting contact information, idk, haven't tried it.

Sync my volume would probably attempt to level the volume on music tracks, but again I don't use it since I don't trust that it works.

Looks like the Sync My Volume is a way to change the default volume for the Sync lady. Set a slider on your Mac and then it puts a file on a USB drive that you take to the car. My volumes were good from the dealer so don't need that....let me see what Sync My Phone is.....

OK Sync My Phone looks like it is the most useful...If it was 1998. It is a contact application where you can create contacts or import them from a csv file. Then you export them to a USB drive, plug it into the car to import that into the Sync computer in the car. The interface is very reminiscent of the Palm Pilot software....from 1998.

BTW looks like Ford is not a registered Apple developer as none of these programs have the proper security registration under Mountain Lion to open.

You know technically we paid over $15,000 for the Sync system as it came with the car. If we did not buy the car we would not have it.

Leo Laporte endorses and promotes the Sync system on his tech shows. One of the things he says if you are paying for something the company making the software should write it specifically for the platform. They offer Mac versions of their software that looks like it is a port from the Windows side. Since I paid over $15,000 they should have made a native app which would have used the styles that Apple publishes for developers.

Whenever the sync voice is speaking you can just turn the volume up and down at the car and it then changes the volume for this afaik so again its not really useful to me.
