where should i buy a cv shaft
hello all,
ive had this cyclical rubbing coming from my front passenger wheel thought it was brakes rubbing on my hoffibly warped rotors, so i machined the rotors and put new pads on yes so it got worse... i believe it to be the cv shaft because it makes the most noise when there's a load on the shaft, i.e. when i let off the gas in any gear, the noise dies down some, braking makes more noise than coasting, turning, and so on. So to that extent, where should i buy my cv shaft assembly? i was quoted $120 for parts and $140 for labor at my mechanic, id love to do it myself with cheaper parts. Is that feasible? links are welcomed! |

$120 sounds about average for axles. You might be able to find cheaper but shipping is going to cost you the difference.

I bought a new EMPI brand one for about $80 from autopartswarehouse.com, 10Kish miles on it and no problems. It's probably from China or Malaysia but upon inspection it looked like a decent part.
I remember looking at Rockauto, and I think most of their parts were reman. I've got no problem with reman parts but I think they required the core exchange up front which meant the car would sit for awhile as parts were shipped back and forth, and I needed to get it done in one fell swoop. Anyway, no complaints with the EMPI brand yet and it looks to be cheaper than the alternatives suggested. More than when I bought it, but here's a link: http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/se...)&No=10&Npp=10 |

Cores are sent in after the fact... so you would still have now down time.

Are you sure it is the drive shaft? It could be the passenger side drive shaft carrier or wheel bearings. They do make more of a howl though.

If it clunks when on hard lock turning to the right or left and accelerating, it is most likely the driveshaft. That is if it is not loose wheel nuts..
